Mets Announce Season-Ending Injury to Starting Pitcher Before Series vs. Pirates
© Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets have been dealt some unfortunate news regarding another one of their pitchers in their rotation on Friday.

As the Mets travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates in a three-game weekend series that starts on Friday, another one of their starting pitchers will be out for the foreseeable future.

It's been announced that New York has placed RHP Griffin Canning on the 60-day injured list after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

In a start against the Atlanta Braves on June 26, Canning was fielding a ground ball and his left leg buckled while planting in a step while on the pitching mound.

Canning would appear to be in pain with the non-contact injury and would fall to the ground, he would later exit the game after pitching in just 2.2 innings.

It's another unfortunate loss for the New York Mets, as they are already dealing with injuries from starters Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill that has resulted in them serving time on the injured list.

Canning signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Mets after playing five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.

The 29-year-old was on pace to having one of the best seasons of his career, posting a 7-3 record while having a 3.77 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and striking out 70 batters in 76.1 innings pitched.

After placing Canning on the injured list, the Mets recalled RHP Blade Tidwell from Triple-A Syracuse and selected LHP Colin Poche to the major leeague roster.

New York will look to continue their battle in the NL East with the Philadelphia Phillies after capturing the top spot in the division this week.

With a 0.5-game lead on the Phillies, the Mets will have to lean towards other players to join their pitching staff and put together winning baseball.
