The New York Mets missed out on the MLB playoffs in 2025. New York’s lack of pitching depth ultimately doomed the organization as the team dramatically fell from the top seed in the National League to finishing as the seventh seed.
Despite the disappointing year, the Mets are counting on fielding a competitive roster next season, with Francisco Lindor expected to continue operating as an important piece of the organization. The 31-year-old shortstop has been with New York for the past five seasons after an offseason trade with the Cleveland Guardians in 2021. Lindor has continued to be a force at the plate, posting a .267 batting average, .346 on-base percentage, .811 OPS, 31 home runs and 86 RBIs in 2025. He has also consistently been one of the league’s top defensive players up the middle, with 3 FRV (Fielding Run Value) according to Baseball Savant’s Statcast.
While Lindor enters another offseason focused on returning and competing for a playoff spot, the Mets revealed the shortstop recently underwent surgery to address an arm injury.
The team announced on X, “Francisco Lindor recently underwent a right elbow debridement procedure. He's expected to be ready for Spring Training.” Despite the news, Lindor is not expected to miss any time, and it remains unclear whether the issue impacted him during the regular season. Lindor appeared in 160 games in 2025, missing just two total games.

The Mets anticipate Lindor will make a full recovery as his importance to the team has been undeniable since his arrival. Lindor finished runner-up for NL MVP in 2024 and has earned two consecutive Silver Slugger Awards for the Mets, nominated as a finalist once again this year.
Lindor is still locked up into New York’s core for the future as he just finished the fifth season of his 10-year, $341 million contract . The Mets will have many decisions in the offseason, including the possible re-signing of free agent Pete Alonso, along with the additions of starting pitching and bullpen help, yet adding a shortstop will not be on that list.
Despite the Mets’ struggles, Lindor’s consistency has remained a bright spot. His leadership, durability and defensive excellence have anchored the team through highs and lows. As New York enters a pivotal offseason, Lindor remains a foundational piece the organization can build around while addressing other pressing needs.
