Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Injury News Amid Player's Absence Against Yankees
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets and New York Yankees have been evenly matched through the first two games of their series, as the Yankees won 6-2 on Friday and the Mets won 3-2 on Saturday. The two teams will play their rubber match on Sunday night, with southpaws Max Fried (6-0, 1.11 ERA) and David Peterson (2-2, 3.05 ERA) pitching for the Yankees (26-19) and Mets (29-17), respectively.

This is Juan Soto's first series at Yankee Stadium since signing a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets in the offseason. The right fielder helped lead the Yankees to the World Series last year on an expiring contract.

Soto has had a quite series so far, as he's just 1-for-6 with four walks and two runs scored. To make matters worse, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reported an injury suffered by a fellow outfielder, via SNY.

"Last night, he [Tyrone Taylor] started cramping up towards the end of the game," he said. "So, I was kind of like 50-50 when I was making the lineup [on Sunday]."

"He's fine today. But last night with him talking to the trainers, the last couple of innings, I think there was a play when he dove headfirst and he felt some cramping around the calf area," he continued.

Mendoza held Taylor out of the lineup on Sunday despite his improved condition. The 31-year-old is slashing .233/.287/.358 with one homer and six RBI this season.

Mendoza will start Jeff McNeil, who's slashing .229/.333/.458 with two homers and seven RBI, in center field to replace Taylor.
