Mets' Clay Holmes Sends Message Before Playing Yankees

The New York Mets lost 4-0 in the finale of their three-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday at home. Their next series will be on the road, but still in New York.

The Mets (28-16) will play the New York Yankees, who had Clay Holmes and Juan Soto last season, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The two teams met in spring training, but these will be their first competitive games of the year.

Holmes (5-2, 3.14 ERA) earned the loss on Wednesday after giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings. The 6-foot-5-inch, 245-pounder opened up about returning to Yankee Stadium after the Pirates (15-29) contest, via SNY.

"Yeah, it'll be my first time on the visiting side. I'm looking forward to it," he said. "Still know a few guys over there. It'll be fun to go back there as a visitor and hopefully get a few wins. Should be a great atmosphere."

Holmes pitched for the Yankees from 2021-24, and was their closer from 2022-24. The right-hander converted 20 of 25 save opportunities in '22 and 24 of 27 in '23, but just 30 of 43 last season. His 13 blown saves in the latter campaign led MLB.

The Mets then signed Holmes to a three-year, $38 million contract in the offseason and converted him to a starter. The 32-year-old's nine starts this year are already a career high.
