New York Mets reliever Edwin Diaz was hoping that his 2024 campaign was going to be a magical comeback season after he missed all of 2023 with a torn patellar tendon.
Instead, he's having one of the worst years of his career and on Sunday night, things took another brutal turn.
Ten-game suspension for Edwin Díaz will be coming after this ejection for having a foreign substance on his hand. https://t.co/L7eNyOLqZZ

Both Diaz and crew chief Vic Carapazza spoke on the ejection following the Mets' 5-2 win against the Chicago Cubs.

"I use the same thing, always," the two-time All-Star said. "I rub rosin, sweat and I put my hand in the dirt a little bit because I need to have some grip on the ball. ... I was really surprised because I didn't have anything on my hand, glove or belt. They always check everything."
Carapazza disputed Diaz's claims.
Crew chief Vic Carapazza re Edwin Diaz being ejected tonight in the Mets/Cubs game after checking his hand: “It definitely wasn’t rosin and sweat. We’ve checked 1000’s of these. I know what that feeling is. This was very sticky.”

The pending suspension will be another pause in the 30-year-old's season.
Diaz returned to the mound at the start of the campaign but after early struggles (and temporarily losing the closer's gig), he was placed on the injured list in late May due to a shoulder impingement.
Diaz went 19 days without making an appearance with the Mets before coming back on June 13. Since returning, the right-hander has gone three scoreless innings over three outings while allowing no walks and two hits with three strikeouts while picking up one win and two saves.
He's lowered his ERA from 5.40 to 4.70 during the span.
After showing signs of his 2022 All-Star self, Diaz is again facing an absence and bump in his 2024 season.
