Devin Williams became one of the best closers in the MLB in his six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. However, he endured a difficult solo campaign with the New York Yankees in 2025. Therefore, Williams has a point to prove this season despite signing a three-year, $51 million contract with the New York Mets.

Despite making a solid start with his new team, Devin Williams is going through a tough spell, as are the New York Mets. The two-time Reliever of the Year had his first blown save of the season on Sunday. The home fans vociferously expressed their displeasure after he suffered another poor outing to take the loss in the series opener against the Minnesota Twins at Citi Field.

Williams entered the game at the top of the ninth inning with the game tied at three runs apiece. The 31-year-old right-hander started off by walking Josh Bell before pinch runner James Outman stole second base. He then walked Ryan Jeffers, and Kody Clemens came up with a bunt hit to load up the bases.

Ryan Keaschall got a ground ball single on a chopper to left field to put the Twins ahead by one run. The Mets pitcher then surrendered a bases-loaded walk to Matt Wallner to put the visitors up by two. Devin Williams exited the game after 21 pitches without recording a single out as loud boos rang all around the ballpark.

Austin Warren came to the mound for the Mets and racked up three straight strikeouts to stem the slide. However, Cole Sands came back on for another inning, retiring the side in order to hold the 5-3 lead and pick up the win.

Couldn’t Throw My Changeup For a Strike: Devin Williams On His Poor Performance

Speaking to reporters after the game, Devin Williams refused to attribute the massive early-season slump of the New York Mets to his recent struggles on the mound. He blamed a lack of control on his signature changeup for his torrid outing against the Minnesota Twins on Monday.

“Obviously, you want to do well,” Williams said, as per SNY. “We’re in a tough stretch here. It’s the same as any other game.”

“Today, I didn’t have command. Couldn’t throw my changeup for a strike. It’s tough to be one-dimensional.”

As a result, Devin Williams has only recorded 6.1 innings from his eight appearances this year with a humongous 9.95 ERA. Meanwhile, the Mets extended their losing streak to 12 games after their defeat against the Twins.
