The New York Mets have officially reached their breaking point with manager Carlos Mendoza.
On Friday morning, Jon Heyman reported that Mendoza has been let go. Former San Diego Padres skipper Andy Green will step in as the team's interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Mendoza led the Mets to the NLCS during his first year in Queens and then went 83-79 during the 2025 season. Unfortunately for the 46-year-old manager, everything fell apart this year.
At 34-47, the Mets are currently in last place in the NL East. They have lost their past six games, which includes a 15-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies and 10-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Mendoza was visibly frustrated after the Mets lost 4-3 to the Cubs on Thursday.
"It’s just routine plays that are costing us. At this level, you expect to make plays like that, those are routine plays," Mendoza said. "You understand that they’re not gonna be perfect, but those are as routine as it gets and teams are making us pay for it, especially the past few nights."
Most of the Mets' fan base is thrilled that Mendoza has been let go this Friday. Of course, there are some fans who believe he's the scapegoat for this rough season.
"Probably should've happened in April, whether it was his fault or not," one person said. "Carlos Mendoza is a good baseball person, deserved better than the hand he was dealt, but the quality of play and preparedness was just so unacceptable, and that part is on the dugout staff."
"They finally did it after falling 13 games under .500… Honestly, congrats Mendy," a second person wrote. "You’re free."
"Way too overdue but FINALLY THANK YOU," a fan commented.
Time will tell if Mendoza gets a second chance in the MLB. As for the Mets, they can't get much worse this season.
