When it rains, it pours for the New York Mets. Everything that could've gone wrong for Carlos Mendoza's team has gone wrong so far.
That includes Francisco Lindor's calf injury. He hasn't suited up since April 22, and there's still no timetable for his return.
When asked about his star shortstop, the Mets' manager was rather tight-lipped, and it doesn't sound like he's progressing as quickly as they would want.
While he acknowledged that he's getting better, Mendoza made it sound as if Lindor is still a long way from getting back.
"Yeah, it's getting better, showing signs of healing. Now we're moving to the phase where [it's] the strength part, you know, in the weight room, before he starts his running progression. So positive sign. We just got to let it heal,” Mendoza said (h/t SNY Mets).
On a positive note, it looks like he won't need any further testing to determine the extent of the injury. The 32-year-old already underwent an MRI, and Mendoza said that will be enough.
“I don't think so. They didn't say anything about that. He's just now, like I said, this strengthening part now and then, you know, we can start progressing,” Mendoza said.
Lindor got off to a somewhat slow start to the season, hitting .226 with five RBI and two home runs.
The initial projected timeline suggested Lindor would be out until mid-June, but with the team noncommittal about any potential date, that might no longer be the case.
In the meantime, the Mets will try to fight for their lives in the NL East. They're currently sitting on a disappointing 17-25 record, and regardless of the front office's support, there are major doubts about Mendoza's future with the organization.
