Mets infielder Jorge Polanco's disappointing season ends

Infielder Jorge Polanco had big shoes to fill when he signed with the New York Mets to take over for Pete Alonso at first base. His first season in New York proved to be a disaster.

Steve Gelbs of SNY reported that Mets manager Andy Green said Polanco will undergo season-ending surgery. Polanco had been placed on the Injured List with left ankle bursitis earlier on Wednesday.

Polanco easily had the worst season of his career in 2026. He managed only 145 plate appearances as he battled wrist and ankle injuries, posting a .148/.201/.230 batting line with two homers and five doubles. Polanco was barely able to play defensively with only 20 innings at first base.

New York Mets may be hoping for Jorge Polanco turnaround in 2027

Polanco's injury-riddled season puts the Mets in a difficult spot as they look to build the 2027 roster. If healthy, Polanco has typically been a solid hitter and could be a key part of the lineup as the designated hitter. The Mets could also look to continue the experiment of putting Polanco at first base as opposed to looking for an upgrade in free agency or the trade market.

The Mets may not be able to walk away from Polanco if he does not return to form. He is due to receive $23 million in 2027, a significant sum for any owner to swallow.

Polanco's contract means that he will be a part of the Mets' 2027 plans. However, questions remain — where does he fit, and can he return to form? The Mets have no choice but to hope that is the case.
