Mets Make Intriguing Roster Decision Ahead of Reds Game

The New York Mets are shaking up their roster before today's game against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Mets have designated infielder Vidal Bruján for assignment. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of infielder Zack Short. New York claimed Short, a former Met, off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

The Mets also activated starting pitcher Kodai Senga from the 15-day injured list and optioned reliever Jonathan Pintaro back to Triple-A Syracuse. Senga will start today's game, though he is expected to be on a pitch count.

Short appeared in 23 games for the Tigers this season. He hit .167 with a .304 on-base percentage while filling a utility role and making starts at multiple infield positions. The 31-year-old previously spent time with the Mets in 2024, appearing in 10 games after making the club's Opening Day roster.

Bruján appeared in nine games for the Mets this season and made a handful of starts. In 11 at-bats, he collected just one hit. That hit came with the bases loaded in a thrilling win over the Washington Nationals on May 18.

Bruján primarily served as a late-inning defensive replacement and pinch-running option. He was caught stealing in his only stolen base attempt of the season.

The Mets have scrambled for infield depth since losing star shortstop Francisco Lindor to a strained left calf on April 22. Lindor's recovery has been lengthy, but he recently returned to baseball activities. He will likely need a short rehab assignment, which could begin any day.

Given Lindor's desire to return quickly, he could be back in the Mets lineup before the end of June.

The Mets also lost Lindor's primary backup, Ronny Mauricio, to a fractured thumb on May 3 after he slid headfirst into first base. Mauricio is nearing a return and reports indicate he could begin a rehab assignment later this week. That makes Short a likely short-term solution until Lindor or Mauricio rejoins the team.

The Mets have battled injuries throughout the season, which helps explain their disappointing record of 32-40. However, Senga's return and the impending returns of Lindor, Mauricio, and perhaps even Jorge Polanco provide some optimism.

Despite sitting eight games under .500, the Mets remain just 5.5 games behind the final National League Wild Card spot.
