New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is back in the lineup and will start Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, the team confirmed on X. He'll bat fourth behind Juan Soto.

Alonso, who recently competed in his fifth All-Star Game, didn’t start on Sunday because of a right hand contusion. Although Mark Vientos started at first base in the 3-2 victory, Alonso entered in the seventh and extended his franchise-record games played streak to 354.

The veteran first baseman said he hurt himself taking swings on the hitting machine before Saturday’s 5-2 loss.

“I think the hand is in a really good spot, especially with swelling and pain management,” Alonso told reporters on Sunday.

“I got to a point where I feel I could go and help the team,” he continued. “I was happy to be able to get out there.”

Alonso enters Monday batting .275 with 21 home runs, 77 RBIs, and an .890 OPS for the second-place Mets. He leads the National League with 26 doubles and has already accumulated 2.9 bWAR, trailing only Juan Soto (3.9) among Mets hitters.

The 56-44 Mets trail the rival Phillies by half a game in the NL East. However, the Mets own the National League’s second Wild Card spot, leading the San Diego Padres by 1 1/2 games.
