The New York Mets made a roster decision on Wednesday before their second game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Mets have recalled No. 20 ranked prospect Jonathan Pintaro and optioned right-handed reliever Joey Gerber to Triple-A Syracuse.
The addition of Pintaro gives the Mets a fresh arm in their bullpen after Gerber tossed two innings versus the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Gerber has a 1.80 ERA in five innings of work for the Mets this season.
For Pintaro, this is his second stint in the majors this year with the first coming back in late-May. The righty had hurled two shutout appearances across 3.2 innings out of the Mets' bullpen.
Pintaro, 28, has a 3.16 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 38 strikeouts and a .189 batting average against him in 31.1 innings and 19 appearances for Triple-A Syracuse this season.
Pintaro will be able to provide length for the Mets in relief, which will come in handy given reliever Austin Warren is starting as an opener tonight.
Last season, Pintaro made his major league debut, but was limited to just one appearance where he allowed two runs in 0.2 innings. Pintaro will be hoping to stick around longer this time around in the big-leagues.
The Mets signed Pintaro in June of 2024 out of the Pioneer League. He proceeded to post a 2.68 ERA and 75 strikeouts across 17 appearances as he rose through the ranks of their minor league system that year.
Prior to the 2025 season, one Mets source told me that Pintaro was a pitcher to watch in the organization's farm system.
He will now get another chance to prove he belongs in the major leagues as a relief pitcher.
The Mets enter play on Wednesday with a 29-37 record and in last place in the NL East division. New York is 15.5 games behind the first place Atlanta Braves, but five games back of the third and final Wild Card spot in the NL.
