The New York Mets made a big statement over the weekend, as they completed a series win over the reigning World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers.
After dropping the series opener on Friday, the Mets defeated Los Angeles on Saturday, 5-2, before scoring a 3-1 victory in the series finale on Sunday at Citi Field in Queens.
The Mets rode the strong work on the mound by Kodai Senga on their way to a win in the third game of the series. Senga earned a quality start and a win, as he allowed just an earned run on five hits with four walks issued and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of duty on the hill.
For Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, the series win against the Dodgers is further proof of the great potential of his team.
“We know we’re good,” manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “We like our chances against anybody -- that’s the bottom line.”
The Dodgers got on the board first in the series finale, with Shohei Ohtani hitting a solo home run in the top of the opening inning. But Pete Alonso responded to that in the bottom of the same inning with a two-run blast that also drove Juan Soto to home plate. Alonso ended his brutal 16-game homerless streak that spanned 65 at-bats.
Ryne Stanek, Max Kranick and Reed Garrett got the job done after Senga left the mound, as the trio did not allow a run the rest of the way, with Garrett earning his first save of the 2025 MLB season.
The Mets, who have won four of their last six games, improved to 32-21, two games behind the National League East leaders Philadelphia Phillies.
Looking ahead, New York has a tasty three-game series coming up versus the lowly Chicago White Sox at home, beginning this Monday.
