Mets' Noah Syndergaard finally returns from IL vs. Marlins

New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard will make his season debut Tuesday night as part of a doubleheader against the Miami Marlins, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

The start will be his first appearance in a major league game in almost two years. Syndergaard most recently pitched on Sept. 29, 2019, in a win against the Atlanta Braves.

Syndergaard is not expected to go deep into the game, as he only pitched single innings during his rehab assignment. He also doesn't plan to throw any breaking balls to ease the strain on his elbow.

The 29-year-old is returning from Tommy John surgery and will be a free agent after the 2021 season, so Tuesday's start will be an audition of sorts.

Prior to surgery, Syndergaard had been one of the best starters in baseball. He accumulated a 47-30 record in 119 games with a 3.31 ERA, 1.161 WHIP and 775 strikeouts across 716 innings.

While Syndergaard's fastball used to hit the upper-90s, he was in the 93- to 95-mph range during a recent rehab start, per SNY's Jacob Resnick. A dip is to be expected for a player returning from major surgery.

The Mets enter Tuesday's doubleheader with a 73-82 record. They sit well outside of a playoff spot after a promising start.
