Mets Placement in New MLB Power Rankings Draws Strong Response

It was a strong weekend for the New York Mets. They swept the Colorado Rockies in three straight games and moved back into the top spot in the National League East. Now, they’re tied with the Chicago Cubs for the best record in the National League.

The Mets have been dominant at Citi Field, holding a 24-7 home record. But as they head out on the road for seven straight games, they'll look to improve on their 13-15 mark away from home.

MLB released its weekly power rankings Monday morning, with the Detroit Tigers taking the top spot:

"Tigs at the top The @tigers roar to the No. 1 spot on this week’s Power Rankings!"

What followed was an outpouring of frustration from Mets fans over their team’s placement:

"mets>philly," a fan wrote.

"Mets swept the Phillies, and took 2/3 of dodgers and cubs btw," another fan wrote.

"How is Philly over the Mets that make zero sense," a fan wrote.

"Mets beat dodgers, beat Chicago, swept Philly. Why ya hatin?" A fan wrote.

"So the Mets swept the Phillies, beat the cubs in a series, beat the dodgers in their series and its ranked behind all of those teams with the best record in the NL lol," Another fan wrote.

"Ah yes Phillies over Mets when Mets are first in the division ," a fan wrote.

"Mets are tied for the best record in the NL and won the series against the 3 NL teams ahead of them ," another fan wrote.

Much of the backlash centered on the Phillies, whom the Mets recently overtook in the standings. Despite this, MLB placed Philadelphia at No. 4 and New York at No. 5.

Here’s how the top of the power rankings shook out:

  1. Detroit Tigers
  2. Los Angeles Dodgers
  3. Chicago Cubs
  4. Philadelphia Phillies
  5. New York Mets

New York opens a four-game road series Monday night at Dodger Stadium. After that, they’ll head to Denver for another three-game set against the Rockies.
