Meet the mess...
The New York Mets were riding high in mid-June with the best record in baseball at 45-24. Since then, the Metropolitans have gone an abysmal 35-52.
Currently, the Mets would miss the playoffs through the Cincinnati Reds holding a head-to-head tiebreaker. They have sunk to a 7-12 record in September, and manager Carlos Mendoza is facing growing criticism.
This must feel all too familiar to fans in Flushing. Being a Mets fan must feel like Phil Connors in the 1993 film Groundhog Day, where Bill Murray’s character was forced to relive the same nightmare day over and over again until he gets it right.
It remains to be seen whether the 2025 Mets will escape a season-ending spiral or deliver on their potential. In Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Washington Nationals, the Amazins committed several blunders to give away a should-have-been victory.
Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor each made costly errors. Jacob Young robbing what would’ve been a game-tying Francisco Alvarez homer in the bottom of the ninth was the cruelest of luck.

This followed Saturday’s 5-3 defeat to the Nationals, where Alonso and Juan Soto were both charged with errors and Nolan McLean threw a wild pitch.
Soto allowed a routine ball to skip past his glove and roll to the warning track, allowing Dylan Crews to score from first base.

Mets fans don’t need to be reminded of their 2007 collapse, when they coughed up a seven-game NL East lead with 17 games remaining and missed the postseason by a single game.
A present-day collapse would be even more embarrassing. The current Mets boast a $341 million payroll, only trailing the $349 million spent by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
No longer in control of their own destiny, the Mets will need to finish strong over their remaining six games against the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins.
Should the Mets miss the playoffs, there will be changes abound at Citi Field – and Mendoza certainly won’t be back as manager.
