The first Subway Series in the Juan Soto-Mets era is here, and it's come with a lot of fanfare.
Soto told the New York Post that he's expecting many boos, even going as far as to say his return to the Bronx Friday will be "50,000 against one."
While Soto will be the big storyline, the Mets are entering this matchup with their crosstown rivals on a heater, with the second-best record in the National League.
Mets general manager David Stearns gave updates Wednesday on some key players, including a former top Mets prospect.
Former No. 1 prospect Ronny Mauricio (currently No. 9) has been out since December 2023 after a torn ACL suffered in winter ball.
In his press conference, Stearns didn't indicate Mauricio would be back in the fold unless the Mets absolutely need him.
“Ronny continues to progress. He’s still in Double-A. We’ll get him up to Triple-A here pretty soon, and then it’s just play all three [positions] on the infield, continue to build up volume,” Stearns said.
Stearns concluded by saying: "He’s a player who has options, so he’s going to stay in the minor leagues until we have a need.”
Mauricio's first taste of the big leagues in 2023 wasn't stellar, with a .248 batting average and a strikeout rate near 31%.
However, Mets fans can be optimistic about the young prospect's future and knowing he will soon be an option when needed.
