The New York Mets are expected to be sellers at the Aug. 3 trade deadline. At 37-53, they're 16 games back in the National League East and 11.5 games behind a wild card spot. It's been a disappointing season considering they have the second-highest payroll ($376 million) in MLB.
New York has a handful of noteworthy trade assets, including right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta, right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes, left-handed pitcher A.J. Minter and center fielder Luis Robert Jr.
However, they also have several other players not receiving as much attention. SNY's Chelsea Janes names relief pitcher Huascar Brazoban as an under-the-radar trade candidate for the Mets.
"Before his blow-up Sunday, Huascar Brazoban was quietly establishing himself as the kind of versatile, swing-and-miss-capable type that all bullpens would love to have," Janes wrote. "Since he has multiple years of team control remaining, Brazoban could be a coveted asset for contenders hoping to bolster their bullpen without making the financial investment in more expensive back-end types."
The right-hander did have a disappointing outing in the Mets' 10-9 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. In just 0.1 innings of work, he allowed four hits, one walk, one home run, and five earned runs.
However, it doesn't accurately reflect how he's performed the rest of the season. In 36 games, he has accumulated a 3.00 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 39 strikeouts. Brazoban has become a reliable piece of New York's bullpen.
As mentioned by Janes, his team control also makes him an intriguing trade candidate. The 36-year-old still has three more years of arbitration and isn't set to become a free agent until the 2030 season.
With a trade deadline approaching, contending teams are searching for pieces to upgrade their rosters. With the Mets' postseason hopes nearly nonexistent, Brazoban may not have much longer in New York.
