Mets' Reliever to Resume Rehab After Setback

As the New York Mets return home tonight to start a six-game homestand with the first of three against the Detroit Tigers, they received some positive news regarding one of their injured players.

Anthony DiComo of MLB .com reported that lefty reliever A.J. Minter threw a bullpen session on Tuesday in New York and is expected to be back on a rehab assignment by this weekend. If all goes well, Minter's return shouldn't be too far, according to DiComo.

Minter's rehab was initially from lat surgery last season, which cut his first year with the Mets short. The veteran's rehab got off to a promising start, as he posted a 2.25 ERA with four strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.78 across 7.2 innings for Triple-A Syracuse.

But after that strong effort in Syracuse, Minter felt discomfort in his left hip and needed to be reevaluated. For now, however, Minter seems poised to return after his setback and hopes to make his first appearance in a big league game in 13 months.

The Amazins' signed the 32-year-old to a two-year, $22 million deal in January 2025 and he got off to a great start for the Mets out of the bullpen in a small sample size.

Minter posted a 1.64 ERA in 13 appearances with 13 strikeouts over 11 innings pitched. Minter, though, exited his outing against the Washington Nationals on April 26 due to what was initially deemed as triceps soreness. The lefty hurler was later diagnosed with a torn lat that required surgery, which ended his first season in Flushing.

The Mets could certainly use Minter's services out of the bullpen, especially since the two left-handers they have consist of Brooks Raley, who's pitching in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024. New York's other lefty is Sean Manaea, who has struggled mightily as a long reliever, posting a 6.56 ERA in nine outings, with his tenure with the Mets uncertain at this point.
