The Mets took the first game of a three-game set from the crosstown foe Yankees, a slugfest that provided fireworks on the Fourth of July.
While the offense was sparked by Juan Soto's two-run home run and Jeff McNeil's go-ahead two-run shot off Luke Weaver, the pitching was hardly the reason for the win.
Justin Hagenman, in his first career start, was yanked after just 4 1/3 innings, and was only up in Queens because of injuries to Griffin Canning, Kodai Senga, Tylor Megill and Sean Manaea.
After the win, a report came out that suggested the Mets are looking to make a big pitching splash.
A report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette read that the Mets have checked in on Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller.
Keller had thrown 150 or more innings in three consecutive seasons prior to 2025, and appears well on his way to do so this season.
His 3-10 record is the main blemish on his report card, but his propensity to eat up innings, along with a respectable 3.64 ERA, make him a solid fit for the Mets.
Keller would benefit from the Mets' strong pitching department and the pitcher-friendly confines of Citi Field.
While Senga could return before the All-Star break after making a rehab start on Saturday, a competitive team like the Mets could always use a inning-eating arm, and Keller has proven he can go deep into games every fifth day.
