Mets Reportedly Sign Ex-Red Sox Outfielder After Solid, But Short Stint In Boston
USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets are keeping themselves busy.

New York has been in the news left and right this offseason for its massive spending -- and near acquisition of shortstop Carlos Correa -- but it also has made a few under-the-radar moves. The Mets made another one Friday as they reportedly signed former Boston Red Sox outfielder Jaylin Davis to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

Davis was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 24th round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Appalachian State University. The 28-year-old eventually made his big league debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2019 and spent parts of three seasons with the club before being designated for assignment in 2022.

Boston snatched Davis off waivers last season and after spending some time in the minor leagues, eventually was called up to the major league club and appeared in 12 games with the Red Sox. In the small sample size, Davis slashed .333/.407/.375 and played all three outfield positions for Boston.

Davis likely won't greatly impact the Mets' big league club, but he does provide another depth piece for the team with MLB experience. New York's starting outfield configuration likely will feature Mark Canha, Brandon Nimmo, and Starling Marte. The team also has Tommy Pham and former Red Sox outfielder Abraham Almonte on the active roster as depth options.

The 28-year-old -- if he's able to stick with New York -- likely will spend most of his time in Triple-A, but if he's able to shine maybe we'll see him back in the big leagues at some point in 2023.
