Mets score five runs in dramatic ninth inning to beat Cardinals

The New York Mets kept their hot start to the 2022 MLB season going Monday with a dramatic, come-from-behind win against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Facing a 2-0 deficit in the ninth inning, the Mets scored their first run of the game when Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado threw what could've been the game-winning out over the head of first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

After a double from Jeff McNeil put the go-ahead run on second base, the Mets stayed alive when Dominic Smith legged out an infield single and two runners crossed home plate.

The next batter, Brandon Nimmo, hit a two-run homer to turn the Mets' one-run lead into a comfortable three-run cushion.

In the bottom of the ninth, Mets closer Edwin Díaz got the save with a pop out followed by a strikeout, a walk and another strikeout.

The Mets are now 13-5, the best record in MLB, and they are 4.5 games ahead of the Miami Marlins for first place in the NL East.
