Mets Sign Hard Throwing Veteran Reliever In Intriguing Move

The New York Mets are focused on relief pitching as the offseason continues to progress.

On Wednesday, the Mets signed hard throwing right-handed reliever Yacksel Rios to a minor league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training.

Rios, 30, has spent six seasons in the big-leagues for five teams: the Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics.

In 92 career relief appearances, the righty has posted a 6.32 ERA. Last season for the Athletics, Rios made just three appearances and had a 37.80 ERA. In July, he underwent season–ending surgery to repair an axillary branch aneurysm in his right shoulder.

If Rios is healthy, he will be competing for a spot in a very thin Mets' bullpen that is likely to see several additions before the start of spring training. 

Rios is an intriguing acquisition considering he averages 96.5 mph on his fastball and features a slider, sinker and split finger in his arsenal. If utilized properly, the Mets may be able to tap into his potential in 2024.

At the very least, Rios will be used as a depth piece reliever at the Triple-A level.
