Mey Day a Bright Spot on a Dark Day

Luis Mey was the bright spot on a day when the Reds dropped to 18-18, beaten by a freak inside-the-park home run, losing a prospect to injury in the process, and were shut out for the fifth time this season.

Mey pitched the eighth inning and struck out the last two batters he faced, Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris II.

The big right-hander stayed around 98 miles an hour on the 11 pitches he threw. His first strike to Harris was at 99.2.

The Reds saw the progression that Mey made in spring training and elevated him to the big club after former All-Star closer Alexis Diaz was inconsistent.

The Reds would like the same from Mey, and after three games, they are starting to see it.

Mey has pitched in three games, albeit in low-pressure situations, but he has three innings in which he’s walked two and struck out nine. Mey has given up one run on two hits.

“He’s not the finished product,” Terry Francona said. “We want him to be more consistent.’

At 6’5” and 235 pounds, the 23-year-old is well on his way toward that goal.
