Pro tennis will return to Miami in December, as the Miami Marlins ballpark, LoanDepot park, will host an indoor tennis exhibition. On December 8th, the exhibition features world #1 Carlos Alcaraz vs Brazilian young gun Joao Fonseca, while two-time Grand Slam finalist Amanda Anisimova will take on Britain’s Emma Raducanu.
From Major League Baseball and the Marlins: “The presale for the Miami Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday, and tickets will be open to the public at 10 a.m. on Oct. 3. Tickets will be available for purchase at Tickets.com. Fans can register at Marlins.com/MiamiInvitational for access to the exclusive presale.”
LoanDepot Park in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami has been able to garner significant attendance for events besides their main tenant, Marlins baseball, a team that has long languished in the MLB for stadium attendance. The modern stadium features a roof and is climate controlled, which is critical given the hot and humid climate year around in Miami. The NHL’s Winter Classic is also scheduled to take place at the stadium, and the World Baseball Classic fills the stadium for international competition when it’s held, especially for games between Latin American powerhouses like Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
These tennis matches are the first to take place at the stadium and is another offering for tennis in the South Florida region. Hard Rock stadium in Miami is the host of the ATP/WTA Masters tournament the Miami Open. While further up the coast, Delray Beach hosts an ATP tournament.
Alcaraz is one of the most marketable players in men’s tennis today, he was recently named as the top earner in men’s tennis by Forbes, while Fonseca’s matches attract a lot of interest, especially from Brazil as he carries the legacy of famous Brazilian champions like Gustavo Kuerten.
Anisimova is a Miami resident, like many pro players, and is currently having the best season of her career. Raducanu is aiming to work her way back into the top 15, with her biggest career achievement being the 2021 US Open title.
Alcaraz is already participating in at least one other exhibition this season, he will take part in the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia, and is dedicated to maximizing his earning power during the prime of his career. These events show the popularity of tennis beyond the main tours.
