Miami Marlins Trade Dylan Floro to Minnesota Twins in Exchange For Jorge López

The Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins have swapped veteran relievers, MLB Network contributor Craig Mish first reported Wednesday evening.

Dylan Floro is headed from Miami to Minnesota, while the Twins are bringing in Jorge López. The teams confirmed the move on social media and their respective transaction logs.

While the 32-year-old Floro is slated to become a free agent this coming offseason, the 30-year-old López still has one more year of team control.

Floro ranked second on Miami's staff with 43 appearances on the mound this year, although he put up a 4.54 ERA and 1.487 WHIP in those games. The Marlins were 18-3 in Floro's first 21 outings this season – during which he had a 2.49 ERA and 1.062 WHIP – but just 10-12 in his last 22, when he put up a 7.00 ERA and 2.056 WHIP.

Prior to this season, Floro was 21-16 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.273 WHIP for his career, including a 2.91 ERA and 1.198 WHIP across his two seasons with the Marlins.

López, on the other hand, struggled to produce as a part-time starter through the first six seasons of his major league career.  Before he became a full-time reliever, López was 12-31 with a 6.04 ERA and 1.546 WHIP with the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles.

In 2022, López had 19 saves, a 1.68 ERA and 0.972 WHIP in 44 relief appearances with the Orioles, earning a spot on the AL All-Star team in the process. He was then flipped to the Twins at the trade deadline, closing out the year with a 4.37 ERA and 1.632 WHIP in his 23 outings in Minnesota.

López's numbers continued to fall off in 2023 – he owns a 5.09 ERA and 1.274 WHIP through 37 appearances.

Similarly to Floro, though, López did not allow a single earned run in April, and he boasted a 1.31 ERA and 0.919 WHIP through May 20. The Twins were 16-5 when Floro took the mound to that point, compared to 8-8 since, thanks to his 10.43 ERA and 1.772 WHIP.

Both right-handers are joining teams that are right in the thick of the playoff race. The 54-50 Twins have a 2.0-game lead atop the AL Central, while the Marlins are 0.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot at 55-48.
