Michael Soroka keeping Diamondbacks' slim postseason hopes alive

Michael Soroka's late-season resurgence has been vital in helping to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks' slim postseason hopes alive. He's been a pitcher who deserves more recognition for his solid efforts in the team's postseason push.

As of Friday, the team sits two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the final NL Wild Card spot with only three games remaining for them to play.

Soroka returned from his second stint on the injured list on Sept. 9, and the right-hander has dominated with a 2.81 ERA. He's also only surrendered five earned runs across 16 innings pitched while recording 19 strikeouts against just three walks.

Soroka owns a respectable 9-5 record this season, with a 3.31 ERA, 110 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP.

Diamondbacks are riding on a successful Michael Soroka finale for postseason berth

His most pivotal start this season came on Tuesday, when he threw seven stellar innings, allowing only one earned run on two hits and fanning nine opponents. It helped to lock in a critical 7-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.

The win helped keep the team out of elimination and alive in the NL Wild Card hunt as they enter the final weekend of the regular season.

But in order for the Diamondbacks to sneak their way into the postseason, they will have to sweep the San Diego Padres. But the Diamondbacks hold the tiebreaker over the Phillies and can snag a postseason spot if they finish even with the Phillies.

With Soroka set to make his last start of the regular season on Sunday, the team's playoff fate will be riding on his success.
