Mike Fiers addresses Giancarlo Stanton tweet controversy
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Fiers is having to clear things up after a questionable episode on Twitter.

On Monday, the Oakland Athletics righty was revealed to have liked a tweet from a user telling him to hit Giancarlo Stanton in the mouth with a pitch.

The context here is that Fiers actually did hit Stanton in the mouth with a pitch back in 2014, causing some real damage to the talented slugger.

Fiers addressed the uproar on Tuesday by saying that he was quickly liking a series of tweets congratulating him on this week’s move to Oakland from the Detroit Tigers and did not notice that the Stanton tweet was among them. He also offered a plea for people to cool it with the “outrageous” tweets.

Fiers and Stanton have had something of a rivalry ever since the incident four years ago, so the veteran pitcher liking that tweet was certainly going to make waves. It doesn’t appear that there was any legitimate intent behind it though.
