The 2023 World Baseball Classic fittingly ended with Los Angeles Angels great and Team USA center fielder Mike Trout facing then-teammate and Team Japan superstar Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani famously struck Trout out, giving Japan its first WBC title since 2009. Not only did the viral clash clearly impact baseball fans, but Ohtani called it the “best moment in my life.”
If Trout gets his way, he’ll be back in a Team USA uniform next March.
Trout recently told Sportico he plans to compete in the 2026 WBC, though he added that he’s still waiting on an invitation.
“I haven’t heard anything yet,” Trout said.
“Nobody’s brought it up to me,” Trout added, “but if they ask, I’m there.”
Trout hit .296 with a home run, seven RBI, and a .962 OPS during the 2023 event. It’s surprising no one from Team USA has contacted Trout privately and gauged the 33-year-old’s interest in competing next year.
The 2023 Team USA roster featured many notable names, including perennial All-Stars J.T. Realmuto, Pete Alonso, Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, and Mookie Betts. We also can’t forget Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner mashing five home runs in six games.

It’s unclear what next year’s squad will look like, though Trout clearly wants to play. We’ll see if other marquee names, including New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge, declare their interest soon.
Injuries have limited Trout’s availability in recent years and recently forced a move to right field. Nonetheless, Team USA must invite the three-time AL MVP if he’s healthy enough to compete next spring.
Besides, baseball fans deserve an Ohtani vs. Trout rematch. Who cares about a random Dodgers-Angels game in August when we can get one on the world’s biggest stage?
