The Milwaukee Brewers are expected to be one of the busiest teams ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. At 62-43, they are tied with the Chicago Cubs for both the best record in the National League and for first place in the NL Central Division.

But while everyone is waiting to see if they will be able to acquire slugging third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, recent reports state that the Brewers are close to acquiring Danny Jansen, a journeyman catcher, from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Jansen is hitting .204/.314/.389 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI this season.

Why Would the Milwaukee Brewers Want to Trade for Tampa Bay Rays Catcher Danny Jansen

The Brewers, of course, already have two catchers on their Major League roster: William Contreras and Eric Haase. Jansen, a graduate of Appleton West High School in Wisconsin, does not have any minor league options left.

So why would Milwaukee want to trade for a catcher?

There are really two possible answers. The first is that Contreras, who is hitting .242/.342/.340 with six home runs and 42 RBI (well below his career averages) could be headed for the injured list due to a fractured finger in his left hand that he has been playing through all season.

If Milwaukee were to do this, though, it would end his year and he would not able able to play until next season.

The other is that, since Jeferson Quero re-injured his shoulder down in Triple-A Nashville, the Brewers want to send Haase down to get more playing time there. He is currently hitting .229/.289/.357 with two home runs and nine RBI in 30 games played this season.

As of the start of this writing, it appears that the rumors are heating up, with multiple baseball insiders reporting that a deal between Milwaukee and Tampa Bay for Jansen has been completed:

Areinamo is an infield prospect that was playing for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and is hitting .297/.355/.463 with 11 home runs, 51 RBI, and 15 stolen bases this season.
