Milwaukee Brewers: Brandon Woodruff Makes MLB History in 6-0 Win Over Seattle Mariners

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-0 on Monday night to win their 11th straight game in a row. Elsewhere in baseball, the Chicago Cubs lost 12-4 to the Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates by a 3-0 score. These losses, along with Milwaukee’s win, vaulted the Brewers into first place in the National League Central Division and gave them, at 60-40, the best record in all Major League Baseball.

After failing to get a single hit through the game’s first five innings, Milwaukee’s hitters exploded in the six inning, scoring four runs, three of which came on three consecutive two-out RBI hits from Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, and Isaac Collins.

It would be all the offense the Brewers would need (though they added two more runs in the eighth inning) because of the absolutely brilliant performance of Brandon Woodruff on the mound.

Milwaukee Brewers Starter Brandon Woodruff Etches Name in Major League History

Woodruff, of course, missed close to two years due to a shoulder injury that required surgery and a long recovery. He recently just returned prior to the All-Star break, and Monday night’s contest was his first start following the Midsummer Classic.

As was the case when he made his long-awaited return from injury, Woodruff picked up right where he left off. While the offense struggled to hit early, the two-time All-Star kept Mariners hitters just as ineffective. A four-pitch first inning set the tone for what was to be six innings of shutout ball that saw Woodruff give up just two hits, allow no walks, and strikeout five.

He was pulled from the game after the sixth inning and just 62 pitches due to a cramp in his leg. Seeing as they just Woodruff back from a long injury recovery, the Brewers wanted to play it safe and turned the game over to the bullpen.

But, prior to being taken out, Woodruff joined former teammate Corbin Burnes as one of just eight pitchers since 1901 to begin his season with three consecutive games of striking out at least five batters while not giving up any walks:

There is no concern about Woodruff’s leg cramp, and after the game he called it a “non issue.” But Milwaukee was wise to play it safe with him despite his low pitch count. Given how well he has thrown since his return, he will be a key piece of the starting rotation as the Brewers make a push for the playoffs.

Since returning from his injury, Woodruff is now 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA.
