Sunday was a big day for the 2025 Milwaukee Brewers. Not only did they win their 50th game of the season, improving to 50-40 on the year, they saw two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff return to mound for the first time since September of 2023. The former Brewers ace had been sidelined as he recovered from a shoulder injury, and would have been back earlier had it not been for freak setbacks during his rehab that had nothing to do with his previous injury.
All the waiting was worth it, though, as Woodruff tossed six innings of one-run baseball, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out eight in Milwaukee’s 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins.
In addition to Woodruff’s return, Brewers ace Freddy Peralta was informed that he had made the 2025 NL All-Star team. It is the second time in his career that he has been named an All-Star.
Unfortunately, though, not all the news surrounding Milwaukee’s baseball team on Sunday was as good.
On Saturday, during a game that the Brewers lost 4-2, first baseman Rhys Hoskins was suffered a thumb injury. When shortstop Joey Ortiz’s throw went wide at first base, Hoskins had to move to his left to catch it. And while he applied the tag to get the out, the collision with the runner hurt his thumb.
The Milwaukee first baseman stayed in the game to finish the inning, but could not swing his bat comfortably and was replaced by Jake Bauers. X-rays revealed that it was not broken, but an MRI on Sunday revealed that Hoskins had suffered a grade-two sprain.
He is being placed on the injured list as a result.
Hoskins is batting .242/.340/.428 on the season with 12 home runs and 42 RBI.
While Milwaukee has not announced Hoskins’ trip to the injured list, or a subsequent roster move, multiple reports on social media state that the Brewers are calling up Andrew Vaughn from Triple-A Nashville to take his place:
The Brewers are calling up first baseman Andrew Vaughn, sources say. Vaughn, the former No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 draft, was recently acquired from the White Sox for Aaron Civale. https://t.co/TwfZTA7keA

Vaughn was acquired by Milwaukee earlier this season when they traded starting pitcher Aaron Civale to the Chicago White Sox. In 48 games with Chicago prior to the trade, the third overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft was hitting just .189/.218/.314 with five home runs and 19 RBI.
In parts of five Major League seasons, Vaughn is a .248/.303/.407 hitter. His best years were the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In 2022, he hit .271/.321/.429 with 17 home runs and 76 RBI, and in 2023 he hit .258/.314/.429 with 21 home runs and 80 RBI.
After being acquired by the Brewers, Vaughn hit .259/.338/.500 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 15 games with the Nashville Sounds.
