The Milwaukee Brewers have a great deal to celebrate today. Two-time All-Star starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff made his triumphant return to the Major Leagues after nearly two years of rehabbing a shoulder injury that has kept him out since September of 2023 (a season in which he only made 11 starts). He was as dominant as ever on Sunday against the Miami Marlins, throwing 70 pitches in six innings of work, giving up two hits, one run, no walks, and striking out eight.
The win on Sunday was also Milwaukee’s 50th of the season, putting them at 50-40 on the year. They are currently in second place in the NL Central Division and are in sole possession of the league’s second wild card spot.
Unfortunately, though, there was some bad news for the Brewers on Sunday as well.
In Milwaukee’s 4-2 loss on Saturday night, Rhys Hoskins was pulled from the game early after injuring his thumb in a collision with a baserunner. Shortstop Joey Ortiz’s throw on a tricky play was wide. Hoskins caught the throw and applied the tag to get the out, but hurt his thumb in the process.
While he finished the inning, he could not swing a bat comfortably and was taken out in favor of Jake Bauers. X-rays on his thumb were negative, but he said after the game that it was really sore.
After the win over Miami on Sunday, Milwaukee announced that further imaging had revealed a grade two sprain in his thumb, which will require an IL stint:
Update on Rhys Hoskins: MRI revealed a Grade 2 left thumb sprain that will land him on the IL.
Roster move coming tomorrow.

Hoskins is currently hitting .242/.340/.428 with 12 home runs and 48 RBI on the season.
Earlier this year, the Brewers traded Aaron Civale to the Chicago White Sox after he requested a move upon being reassigned to the bullpen. Milwaukee acquired struggling first baseman Andrew Vaughn in the deal.
Vaughn, who has been playing for the Nashville Sounds, was removed from their game today, indicating a call-up is imminent.
In 48 games with the White Sox this season, Vaughn, a former first-round pick, hit just .189/.218/.314 with five home runs and 19 RBI.
In 15 games with the Sounds, he is hitting .259/.338/.500 with three home runs and 16 RBI.
Like Hoskins, Vaughn is a right-handed hitter, so it is likely that manager Pat Murphy platoons him and Bauers until Hoskins comes back.
