The Milwaukee Brewers’ historic streak came to an end on Sunday, as they suffered a 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds in the series finale at Great American Ball Park in Cincy.
With that loss, the Brewers’ undefeated run had stopped at 14, a remarkable feat, regardless of which way one views it.
This time around, the Brewers got a taste of their medicine, with Cincinnati, which squandered leads in the first two games of the series, turning the tables on Milwaukee by forcing extra innings following a game-tying Jose Trevino RBI single in the bottom of the ninth frame.
It looked as though the Brewers were about to pull off yet another dramatic come-from-behind victory when William Contreras erased a one-run deficit and gave Milwaukee the lead with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning.
“It’s a reminder for our guys that every pitch matters and it ain’t over until it’s over,” Murphy said following the game, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. “We know that because we’ve done it this week. But we’re showing signs of being human.”
Despite the loss to the Reds, the Brewers are still looking safe atop the National League Central with a 78-45 record – an eight-game lead over the rest of their rivals in the division.
It is back to work for the Brewers this Monday, when they start a three-game series in Windy City against the No. 2 team in the NL Central, the Chicago Cubs, at Wrigley Field.
