The Milwaukee Brewers are in position to add again at the trade deadline. If prior years tell us anything about their intentions, it is that they will improve their roster, but not go all-in. In Jeff Passan at ESPN’s latest trade deadline projection piece, he had the Brew Crew doing just that by adding versatile infielder Maikel Garcia.
This year, Garcia was one of four Royals to be elected to the 2025 All-Star Game. The 25-year-old infielder is capable of playing all over the diamond, including shortstop, and is enjoying a nice year at the plate. Through 100 games he is slashing .291/.346/.442 with 41 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases.
Passan predicted García to go to the Brewers not because the Royals are openly shopping him, but because he would add to Milwaukee’s depth, which is a strength they have leaned on this season. His excellent defensive skill set + versatility, speed, and postseason experience make him a natural fit for a team built on doing all the little things right.
To be clear: Kansas City has shown no inclination to move Garcia, who can play all around the diamond but is a very good shortstop, and the Brewers aren’t actively seeking a replacement for Joey Ortiz at short. This is more a reflection of how deep the Brewers are — and why they own the best record in baseball: There are no clear holes on this roster.
-Jeff Passan
While a move isn’t guaranteed, García’s profile aligns well with the Brewers’ roster strategy and could provide a valuable boost as they gear up for a playoff push.
