Amid free agency this offseason including multiple notable starting pitchers, there also is considerable interest in Tanner Scott and the Milwaukee Brewers made Devin Williams available as well.

Scott and Williams are two of the top relief pitchers in baseball, and reportedly became targets for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they look to continue with an aggressive winter after signing Blake Snell and agreeing to a contract extension with Tommy Edman.

But like with Garrett Crochet, a reported Dodgers trade target has been sent elsewhere.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Brewers traded Williams to the New York Yankees in exchange for Nestor Cortes, Caleb Durbin and cash considerations:

The Yankees acquiring Williams marks a second big move since their bid to re-sign Juan Soto fell short. The Yankees’ first pivot was to sign Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million contract in what’s the richest deal for a left-handed pitcher in MLB history.

Meanwhile, Cortes and Williams now change teams after being part of high-profile stumbles in the postseason. Williams surrendered a go-ahead home run to Pete Alonso in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series, and Cortes gave up a walk-off grand slam to Freddie Freeman in Game 1 of the World Series.

That wasn’t Cortes’ final pitch in a Yankees uniform, as he threw 1.2 innings in their Game 3 loss as well.

Spotlight on Tanner Scott after Devin Williams trade

With the Brewers now having traded Williams, the Dodgers and other teams presumably will zero in on Scott. The left-hander conceivably could sign up to a four-year contract.
