It took nearly three weeks before the Milwaukee Brewers suffered their first loss in August, as they fell prey to the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2, in Sunday’s series finale on the road at Great American Ball Park in Cincy.
It was a close game that had everyone sitting on the edge of their seats. After six scoreless innings, the Reds scored the first run of the contest on a Jose Trevino sac fly RBI. The Brewers, who had found a way to pull off come-from-behind wins in the previous two games of the Cincinnati series, had a resurrection in the works when William Contreras’ home run in the bottom of the ninth inning put Milwaukee ahead by two runs. But the Reds refused to fold and forced extra innings with Trevino hitting an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth frame.
The game ended when Austin Hays hit a walk-off single that drove TJ Friedl’s winning run.
Quintana started in the Reds series finale and pitched well. The lefty went 6 ⅓ innings long, allowing just an earned run on five hits with four strikeouts, and while Milwaukee lost, it was in a manner that didn’t greatly disappoint him.
If they were going to lose a game, said Brewers starter Jose Quintana, “I’m really glad we lost a game like that. We never want to lose a game, but if we keep playing that way, we can keep winning games. We’re good. It was a good battle.”
The Brewers, who remain atop the National League Central with a 78-45 record, can get back on track as soon as this Monday night, as they start a series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
