Minor League Baseball Team Has Ditched Controversial Nickname

The world of minor league baseball can get out of hand quickly for those who aren't familiar. From promotional nights that get out of hand to publicity stunts that go viral, there's never a dull moment when fans take a step back from what's going on in the major leagues.

One Triple-A team landed in hot water after a promotional video was used to introduce an alternate identity. The Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco 49ers) will wear jerseys with the name "Gold Diggers."

The change will be made to highlight the "significant impact of this era when Sacramento grew as the closest major city to the gold fields," the River Cats told the Sacramento Bee.

In the promotional video for the new jerseys, the team featured women with dollar signs in their eyes when seeing a River Cats player - another, less family-friendly connotation of the phrase "gold digger."

Sacramento city council member Lisa Kaplan called the video "sexist" and "demeaning," saying that she expects better.

In a statement to SF Gate, the River Cats officially issued an apology to fans and those who were offended by the characterization of the phrase in the video.

"Our recent marketing campaign for an alternative identity clearly missed the mark," the team said in its statement.

"Our intention was to creatively reference the rich history of Sacramento and gold country, but our approach was wrong, and we are sorry for the mistake. We will no longer be using this identity."

The River Cats were originally set to wear the jerseys for five games this season, but now it appears that the idea will be shelved.

The River Cats are sharing their stadium with the Giants' former neighbors from across the bay this season. The former Oakland Athletics are playing in Sutter Health Park until their new stadium is finished in Las Vegas.

The team has seen growing pains in its new venue - a medical cart ran out of gas and needed to be pushed back into the bullpen - but they'll try to make the best out of a unique situation.

As for the River Cats, they'll likely think twice before deciding on another promotional night at the ballpark.
