MLB broadcaster takes shot at Angel Reese during Phillies-White Sox game

Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky has garnered extensive attention and, along with that, criticism, going back to her college days with the LSU Tigers. Now, it appears that the criticism she’s received has extended to MLB.

During Tuesday night’s game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox, Phillies broadcaster John Kruk seemingly took a shot at Angel Reese. At the time, the Phillies led 6-0 and Kurk, alongside broadcast partner Tom McCarthy, joked about a former high school basketball teammate of McCarthy’s.

“He was a heck of a basketball player,” McCarthy said. “Played at Ryder and Monmouth. It’s all because I missed a lot of shots, and he cleaned them up.”

That’s where John Kruk jumped in at the opportunity to make a joke at the expense of Angel Reese. While quickly becoming a star in the WNBA, Reese has been criticized at times for missing shots and getting her own rebounds. Thus, the stat sheet could be inflated. So, Kruk joked, “I don’t want to say anything, but there’s someone here in Chicago who does that a lot.”

Angel Reese is averaging 14.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. She’s done that while shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 20 percent from three-point range. In 23 games this season, including 17 double-doubles. That’s clearly an impressive year for a second-year star. However, she is often criticized by fans for collecting her own rebounds because of the number of shots she misses, though given that she’s averaging 3.9 offensive rebounds per game, it’s only about a third of the rebounds she collects.

The Phillies booth got a laugh out of the joke. McCarthy did jump in to Reese’s defense, briefly, noting that she scores plenty of points too. Of course, that ended up setting Kruk up again.

“She gets her rebounds, too,” Kruk said. “We’ll be getting some tweets about that, I’m sure.”

John Kruk played in MLB from 1986 to 1995. That included stints with the San Diego Padres and the Chicago White Sox. However, he’s best known for his run with the Philadelphia Phillies. He’d be a three-time All-Star in Philadelphia and make the franchise’s Wall of Fame. After his playing career, Kruk began a broadcasting career, and has worked nationally for ESPN and has been calling Phillies games since 2017.

As a broadcaster, Kruk has become known for his signature style. That includes making dry quips and, at times, telling strange stories about his own playing career. Now, he’ll have the chance to find out just how much blowback there might be for joking about Angel Reese in Chicago.
