What do the Boston Red Sox do with shortstop Trevor Story?
The oft-injured 32-year-old has so far alleviated health concerns, playing in 54 of the Red Sox’s 58 games. However, Story’s availability has not compensated for his on-field production.
He is currently batting .218 with a .581 OPS and a 63 OPS+, with six home runs and 10 walks to 67 strikeouts over 211 at-bats. The pop is not there, and Story, who in fairness has mostly been a pull-heavy hitter for his career, has not sprayed the ball around the field. Even with the short right field in Fenway Park, five of his six home runs have gone to left field.
That is but a microcosm of Story’s struggles. He has a career ground ball rate of 35%, and that total is up to 47.6% in 2025. Story has also not impressed defensively, with a -3 Run Value, a far cry from even his recent output (+2 over 26 games in 2024, +6 over 43 games in 2023).
And, perhaps the most significant obstacle with Story is his massive contract.
MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal shared his thoughts on Boston’s Story problem:
“Here is a guy who is struggling offensively and defensively," Rosenthal said. "A guy who had played only 69 games the previous two years. The Red Sox are not going to give up on him and DFA him immediately."
Fair Territory!

Here’s a guy who’s making $22.5 million this year; he’s owed $25 million next year—another $25 million the year after that, and then a $5 million buyout. Teams just don’t cut players unless they have a good reason.
"I don’t expect the Red Sox to do anything along those lines," Rosenthal added. "I do expect we’ll see Roman Anthony at some point. It’s going to be a difficult balancing act for them.”
Story has had a rollercoaster of a career, from shining with the Colorado Rockies in the first half of his career to an injury-riddled saga in Boston over the last four seasons. Father Time is no help, either, and Story’s return to form glory looks more and more unlikely every day.
As Rosenthal said, the Red Sox are pretty much stuck with his services.
Even if Story continues this lack of production, what are their options at the six? Ideally, Marcelo Mayer could take over and begin his reign at his natural position. However, with Alex Bregman out for who knows how long, and Rafael Devers stuck at designated hitter, Mayer has to handle the hot corner.
Boston needs answers, and so far, Story has provided only questions.
