For the first time since joining the New York Mets, veteran shortstop Francisco Lindor can call himself an All-Star.
In fact, Lindor can call himself an All-Star starter. Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday night that Lindor will start for the National League during July 15's All-Star Game in Atlanta.
Lindor beat out Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts. However, Betts will likely still make the team as a reserve.
Lindor last made an All-Star Game in 2019, his fourth consecutive Midsummer Classic appearance. He made all of those appearances with the Cleveland Guardians, who traded him to the Mets following the 2020 season.
The 31-year-old Lindor is hitting .255 with 16 home runs, 43 RBIs, and a .775 OPS for the slumping Mets. Lindor entered Wednesday with 2.8 bWAR, trailing only right fielder Juan Soto (3.4) and first baseman Pete Alonso (2.9) among Mets hitters.
For their sake, Lindor and the Mets will have hopefully righted the ship before he leaves for Atlanta. Wednesday's 7-2 loss dropped the Mets to 48-38 and only 12-16 since June 1.
The Mets entered the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader trailing the Philadelphia Phillies by two games in the NL East. Although the Mets hold the NL's second Wild Card spot, they're only 1 1/2 games ahead of the San Diego Padres.
