For seven innings on Wednesday night, it appeared Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom may finally join the no-hitter club.
Alas, Baltimore Orioles left fielder Colton Cowser had other plans. Cowser opened the eighth inning with a single, ending deGrom's no-no bid and sending the two-time Cy Young winner to the showers.
DeGrom lost his perfect game bid one inning earlier when he walked Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday. The four-time All-Star allowed just three baserunners and struck out seven.
"Simply deGrominant " the official MLB X/Twitter account posted after deGrom's departure.
We're inclined to agree. DeGrom, who turned 37 last week, improved to 8-2 with a 2.08 ERA and a 95-20 K-BB ratio in 88 1/3 innings.
It's hard not to be impressed with deGrom, who is finally healthy after injuries limited him to 20 starts from 2022-24. His 16 starts are already his most since 2019, when he won his second consecutive NL Cy Young and posted a 2.43 ERA over 204 innings.
Unfortunately for deGrom, he's once again posting Cy Young-caliber numbers while playing on a mediocre team. The difference, however, is that he's wearing a Texas Rangers uniform rather than one belonging to the New York Mets.
Texas moved to 40-41 with its 7-0 victory on Wednesday night. As for the 34-46 Orioles, they're inching even closer to their first losing season since 2021.
