MLB Trade Deadline 2025: Instant Takeaways to Padres Landing Mason Miller

The surging San Diego Padres entered the 2025 MLB trade deadline with three All-Star relievers already in their bullpen.

They now have a fourth.

San Diego landed Athletics closer Mason Miller and starting pitcher JP Sears from the Athletics on Thursday morning. However, the Padres parted ways with several young players, including young shortstop and consensus top-10 prospect Leo De Vries.

Here are Athlon’s immediate takeaways to the Mason Miller trade.

1. Have fun facing the Padres’ bullpen

Miller’s been his usual steady self for the A’s, posting a 3.76 ERA and a 59.18 K-BB ratio in 38 1/3 innings. Although he’s walking 4.2 hitters per nine innings, he’s still an imposing threat who should benefit from leaving Sutter Health Park.

Miller, a 2024 All-Star, joins a Padres bullpen featuring Robert Suarez (30 saves and a 3.43 ERA), Jason Adam (1.89 ERA and 1.7 bWAR), and Adrián Morejón (50-9 K-BB ratio and 1.63 ERA in 49 2/3 innings). Good luck to any and all opponents the Padres face in the coming weeks.

The 29-year-old Sears is 7-9 with a 4.95 ERA and a 97-29 K-BB ratio in 111 innings. We’ll see if the Padres intend to use him as a long reliever or if he’ll remain a starter.

2. Your NL West champion San Diego Padres?

Remember all of the preseason talk about Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers cruising to another NL West title? The Padres entered Thursday only three games out of first place, and things are about to get very interesting.

Although the Padres are only 2-5 against the Dodgers, they have two three-game series against their NL West rivals later this month. The Dodgers host the Padres from Aug. 15-17 before the two clubs meet in San Diego a week later.

3. We’re sorry, A’s fans

As is often the case, the Athletics traded a fan favorite amid a losing season. In fairness, it always felt inevitable that the A’s would part ways with Miller, even with him being under team control through 2029.

To recap: the A’s are 15 games under .500 and playing in a minor league stadium. Offseason acquisition Luis Severino all but demanded a trade because he didn’t want to pitch in that minor league stadium.

There is no realistic timetable for their move to Las Vegas, and they’ve closed comments on all X/Twitter posts.

We’re sorry, A’s fans. Hang in there.
