MLB world reacts to Justin Verlander winning Cy Young over Gerrit Cole
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Major League Baseball world was thrown for a loop on Wednesday when Houston Astros starter Justin Verlander was named the AL Cy Young winner over teammate Gerrit Cole.

In terms of the splits, the two matched up pretty darn evenly.

  • Cole: 20-5, 2.50 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 326 strikeouts
  • Verlander: 21-6, 2.58 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 300 strikeouts

Despite this, some begrudgingly noted that this seemed to be more of a lifetime achievement award for Verlander.

Those around the baseball world were not about to disrespect Verlander. However, most came to the conclusion that his teammate should have come away with the award.
