The Major League Baseball world was thrown for a loop on Wednesday when Houston Astros starter Justin Verlander was named the AL Cy Young winner over teammate Gerrit Cole.
In terms of the splits, the two matched up pretty darn evenly.
Despite this, some begrudgingly noted that this seemed to be more of a lifetime achievement award for Verlander.
Respect the season (and career) Justin Verlander put together, but I voted for Gerrit Cole.

Thought he was the most dominant pitcher in the AL.https://t.co/6jnD3iNxRa
Those around the baseball world were not about to disrespect Verlander. However, most came to the conclusion that his teammate should have come away with the award.
I guess this sort of makes up for the times Verlander was robbed, but when I studied it a few weeks ago, I came away pretty convinced Cole should win https://t.co/EIsfu6GyMc

I mean how does Gerrit Cole not win the Cy Young….

Both Detroit BBWAA writers went with Gerrit Cole.

Both Houston BBWAA writers went with Justin Verlander.
Verlander and Cole both had seasons so great and historic, this could have been a tie. If just two voters had flipped their votes, it would have been a tie. https://t.co/mSmIU3ktNJ

Gerrit Cole, in a text message to MLB(dot)com on Verlander winning the Cy Young: "Justin Verlander is a stud. It was a pleasure to run along side him this summer. Congratulations!"

Great for Verlander, but Gerrit Cole was robbed. Cole didn’t let HRs fly by him like Verlander did. Cole has better numbers. WTH? #verlander https://t.co/91cTz3k5b6

I’d like to think that the BBWAA was scared of the wrath of @KateUpton in choosing Verlander this season.

But seriously, congrats to DeGrom and Verlander on their much deserved awards. #CyYoung
