The National League embracing the designated hitter may not be as imminent as many assumed.
MLB insider Jon Heyman and ESPN report that the MLB Players Association rejected an MLB proposal that includes a universal DH and an expanded playoff format for the upcoming season.
Per ESPN, the union has been against agreeing to a universal DH in exchange for a larger postseason tournament. MLB expanded the playoff field to 16 teams for the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign and also had NL clubs utilize the DH to prevent injuries to pitchers.
Heyman added that negotiations are ongoing.
MLB made the offer of a trade — they get expanded playoffs and players get universal DH — before holidays. Union recently rejected the offer. So far no counterproposal from union. Spring training is less than a month away but perhaps an outside chance they figure it out in time?

NL teams use the DH when playing road games at American League clubs. It's widely believed that it's a matter of when, and not if, the Senior Circuit will adopt the DH and, in turn, provide more lucrative opportunities for individuals who aren't top-level defensive players.
While COVID-19 vaccines are available, there is still no timetable for when MLB personnel will receive shots or for when clubs will be able to fill ballparks to even 50% capacity. According to MLB.com, spring training is set to officially open on Feb. 27.
Opening Day is April 1.
