Munetaka Murakami to Begin Minor League Rehab Assignment on Monday

Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, according to manager Will Venable.

The team has not set a specific timetable for Murakami’s return to the major leagues. The rehab assignment is the next step in his recovery process before he is activated from the injured list.

Injury Background

Murakami has been sidelined since late May with a left hamstring strain. The White Sox have taken a cautious approach with the 25-year-old slugger, as hamstring injuries can be tricky and often require a gradual return to game action.

Sending Murakami on a rehab assignment will allow him to get live at-bats and build up his strength and timing in a controlled setting before rejoining the big league club, likely later this week.

The Japanese rookie got off to a hot start to his rookie campaign and has already blasted 20 homers in just 200 at-bats. His return to the Sox lineup is highly anticipated.
