Nationals Make Final Decision on Struggling Player

The Washington Nationals have officially parted ways with veteran right-hander Miles Mikolas, requesting unconditional release waivers on Friday after designating him for assignment earlier this week.

The move, announced by the club, closes a brief tenure for Mikolas in Washington and clears another veteran from the roster as the Nationals continue prioritizing younger talent during the final stretch of the season.

Mikolas signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract before the season to provide stability and experience in Washington's rotation. Instead, he struggled to produce consistent results, finishing with a 3-9 record, a 5.82 ERA, 58 strikeouts and a 1.38 WHIP across 25 appearances, including 11 starts.

His final outing came in relief during an 8-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs . Shortly afterward, the Nationals designated him for assignment, creating room for left-handed pitching prospect Jackson Kent to make his major league debut.

The decision reflects Washington's continued focus on evaluating younger players rather than veterans. At 60-63, the Nationals sit fourth in the National League East, 14 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves and well outside the playoff picture.

Releasing Mikolas also gives the organization additional roster flexibility as it prepares for the remainder of the season. Because he cleared waivers, he becomes a free agent and can sign with any club for the prorated league minimum, while Washington remains responsible for the balance of his guaranteed salary.

The Nationals have also been dealing with several injuries across the roster. James Wood remains on the injured list with an oblique strain, while Connelly Early's rehab has been paused because of forearm tightness. Joey Gallo and Lane Thomas also continue working their way back from long-term injuries.

For Washington, Friday's move signals another step toward building for the future, with younger players now receiving opportunities over struggling veterans.
