Nationals Make Roster Move After Rockies Loss

The Washington Nationals are promoting right-handed pitching prospect Luis Perales from Triple-A Rochester to make his Major League Baseball debut. The move comes after Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies as Washington shifts its focus toward evaluating young talent.

The roster move was first reported by Spencer Nusbaum on X, who wrote that the Nationals were recalling Perales from Rochester, per source. The 23-year-old right-hander will take the roster spot of veteran reliever Jake Bird.

Perales arrives in Washington after posting a 3.64 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 96.1 innings and a 23.5% strikeout rate for Triple-A Rochester in 2026. He spent most of the season working as a starter but has been used in shorter outings recently, throwing two innings or fewer in each of his last four appearances.

That recent workload suggests the Nationals could initially use Perales out of the bullpen. His fastball can reach 98.5 mph, and he also features a cutter and changeup.

Perales’ path to the majors was delayed after he missed most of the 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He has stayed healthy through most of 2026, aside from a brief minimum-stint IL absence in late May.

The call-up comes as the Nationals sit fourth in the NL East at 62-72, 16 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. Washington went 7-16 during August, leaving little remaining playoff leverage and giving the club an opportunity to evaluate players who could compete for roster spots heading into 2027.

For Perales, that makes his first major league opportunity particularly important. The Nationals can now see how his fastball, cutter and changeup translate against MLB hitters while determining where he fits into their plans moving forward.

The move also gives Perales a chance to build on a 2026 season that has marked his return from a significant elbow injury. His debut will be an important next step after a lengthy road back to the majors.
