New Report Emerges on Failed Red Sox-Twins Trade
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With the MLB Trade Deadline officially in the rearview mirror, there have already been plenty of discussions surrounding some of the biggest deals, as well as the winners and losers of the deadline. Right away, one of the most popular opinions is that the Boston Red Sox walked away as big losers of the trade deadline.

Boston did make some moves. They acquired pitchers Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals and Dustin May from the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, given that the Red Sox are in a tight race for an AL Wild Card spot, many expected the team to be a bit more active.

One specific move some expected the Red Sox to make was to acquire Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Ryan. According to reports, the two teams were in talks on such a deal. However, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Boston's talks with the Twins were "feeble at best."

"Epic fail," Rosenthal said of the Red Sox' trade deadline. "Now, again, they met the same problem that the Cubs ran into. Joe Ryan is another starting pitcher who wasn't traded, but my understanding is, any talks they had with the Twins were feeble at best. They didn't come at them hard."

Boston already faced a lot of criticism for seemingly being cheap by trading away Rafal Devers earlier this season, so Rosenthal's report will likely not be one fans want to hear.

Regardless of the Red Sox' activity (or lack thereof) at the trade deadline, they are still riding a lot of momentum. They are winners of five of their last seven games and were 17-7 in July. With a 59-51 record, they are one game ahead of the Seattle Mariners for the second AL Wild Card spot.

As Boston aims to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2021, they will look to keep their momentum going. Hopefully for them, their trade deadline will not come back to bite them.
