New stadium could drastically increase Tampa Bay Rays payroll

The Tampa Bay Rays have not been known for exorbitant payrolls throughout their history. That could change relatively soon.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported on Monday that Rays majority owner Patrick Zalupski said that the Rays new ballpark and surrounding development should drastically increase payroll. Zalupski indicated that the Rays could spend in the top half of the league, and could even push to have a top-10 payroll once the new stadium becomes reality.

In theory, the Tampa Bay region should support that level of spending. Zalupski noted that the area is the 11th-largest media market in the country with approximately 3.5 million residents. A new stadium in a more easily accessible area should make a significant difference.

Tampa Bay Rays will have significant payroll decisions to make soon

As it currently stands, the Rays have just over $25 million in payroll obligations for 2027. However, designated hitter Yandy Diaz and pitcher Freddy Peralta will enter free agency after the season. Diaz has been a key part of the Rays lineup since establishing himself as a major league player in 2019. Peralta has put together two consecutive impressive outings and appears to be returning to form. Both players would make a significant difference to the Rays chances in 2027, but they may cost more than they have typically been comfortable spending.

Likewise, the Rays have several young players who they could look to sign to long-term extensions. Third baseman Junior Caminero has established himself as one of the best young players in the majors and is yet to reach arbitration. This may be the Rays last chance at signing him for a relative bargain. Catcher Liam Hicks could be the answer behind the plate that the Rays have searched for throughout franchise history. First baseman Jonathan Aranda has been a solid bat with Caminero and Diaz.

The Rays are looking to increase their payroll once the new stadium becomes reality. That increase could come a lot faster if the Rays new ownership wants to lock in several important parts of the roster.
